Professional Attire for Women

Attire for Women
Clothes
  • Dress professionally, conservatively, and comfortably.
  • Invest in a good quality suit in a conservative color (black, navy, gray, tan, or brown), and a conservative long-sleeved blouse (preferably in a light color that complements the suit).
  • Avoid wearing something too trendy or too "loud".  You do not want your outfit to stand out more than you do during the interview.
  • Avoid short skirts/dresses and low cut or see-through blouses!

Footwear

  • Wear polished heels, no higher than 2 inches.  Do not wear open toed shoes.
  • Wear sheer stockings or pantyhose in skin tones.
  • Have an extra pair of pantyhose available in case you get a run in your pantyhose.
  • Make sure that your shoes are comfortable. Depending on the job position, as well as the schedule for your interview, you might find yourself walking to many different offices throughout the course of the day (in order to meet various individuals and groups).

Accessories

  • Keep jewelry accessories to a minimum. Wear one pair of earrings (preferably ones that do not dangle) and one ring per hand.  If you have facial piercings, you should probably remove them before your job interview.
  • A lapel pin is fine, but not together with a collar pin.
  • Scarves can add a nice touch to your interview outfit. Carefully chose a conservative scarf. Avoid ones that contain distracting prints or loud colors.
  • If you choose to bring a purse, make sure that is of medium size and of good quality (preferably leather).
  • You can also bring a nice portfolio or briefcase with a notepad and several pens. Avoid backpacks.

Grooming

  • Your fingernails should be clean, trimmed, and well-groomed. If you prefer to wear nail polish, use a light shade or clear.
  • Hair can be worn down or up, as long as it looks neat.
  • Do not wear perfume or strong scented lotions.  Your interviewer might be allergic to particular fragrances or scents.
