How to Network (Online)

The internet can be a great way to network with potential employers, colleagues, and professional mentors. Casual relationships can turn into wonderful networking opportunities if you play your cards right. There are thousands of discussion boards and groups online, covering hundreds of topics. Many recruiters are lurking amongst the discussion boards and groups, seeking potential employment candidates.

Since you are not talking to someone face-to-face, online networking eliminates some of the stress of making new connections. However, do not make the mistake of viewing it as “easier.” It can be just as tricky, if you are not careful. Since you cannot use your voice or non-verbal cues to show interest and sincerity, you have to ensure that the words that you use, along with the ways that you articulate your ideas and opinions, are properly presented.

Take advantage or resources such as academic/research based mailing lists and “LinkedIn.” For further information, link to our social media page.
