Professional Attire for Men

Attire for Men

Clothing
  • Invest in a good quality, conservative, professional two-piece business suit.  Your suit should either be a solid color or subtle pinstripes. Try to wear a dark colored suit (navy blue, gray, or black).
  • Wear a long-sleeved shirt in a light color.  White is usually the best bet. Stripped shirts should never be worn with stripped suits. When wearing a striped shirt with a solid suit, the stripes should be subtle enough to disappear at a distance.
  • The cuffs and collar of the shirt should be the same color as the body of the shirt
  • The hem of your pants should reach the top of your shoe.
  • Have your shirt professionally dry-cleaned and pressed OR make sure that you do a great job ironing it.  You do not want to look wrinkled.
  • The sleeve of your suit jacket should end at the joint of your wrist and hand. The jacket bottom should cover your seat.
  • Do not remove your coat or tie during an interview.

Footwear

  • Wear polished shoes that are in good condition and look appropriate with a suit.
  • Wear dark socks that go over the calf and that will not slide down.
  • Make sure that your shoes are comfortable. Depending on the job position, as well as the interview schedule, you might find yourself walking to many different offices throughout the course of the day (in order to meet various individuals and groups).

Accessories

  • Wear a conservative tie (preferably silk). Nothing too flashy! You do not want the color or pattern of your tie to overshadow you.
  • Wear a leather belt. The belt should be no more than one and a half inches thick, with a simple brass or silver buckle. The color of your belt should match the color of your shoes.
  • Avoid jewelry (or keep it to a bare minimum). If you desire to wear jewelry, stick to one ring on your finger, as well as a watch. Avoid earrings, necklaces, bracelets, etc.
  • You should bring a portfolio or a briefcase (and bring extra pins). Avoid backpacks.

Grooming

  • Make sure fingernails are clean and well groomed.
  • Shave and cut long hair.
  • Wear minimal or no cologne. Your interviewer might be allergic to particular fragrances or scents.
