Sociology

DESCRIPTION   [Top]

Sociology is the study of social interaction, organization, and change. Sociologists examine the structure of the global system, societies, organizations, and groups and how individuals interact within these contexts. All human behavior is social and therefore the subject matter and applicability of sociology ranges widely. Sociologists investigate close relationships, work organizations, health care, religion, and organized crime. In addition, they study the discrepancies in life’s opportunities created by gender, race, and age, as well as the shared values and beliefs generated in a common culture. Subfields in sociology include the sociology of community, criminology, cultural studies, demography, education, environmental sociology, family and close relationships, gerontology, inequality, law, medical sociology, organizations, politics, race and ethnic relations, religion, research methods, social change, social psychology, and politics. UNCG’s Sociology Department has at least one faculty member who is an expert in each of these subfields. Persons holding a bachelor’s degree in Sociology are frequently employed in business, the helping professions, and in various administrative and research positions. Positions using the title “sociologist” usually require graduate study. UNCG offers a BA in Sociology, which can include Teacher Certification in Social Studies or a concentration in Criminology or Social Problems in a Global Society, and an MA in Sociology, which also can include a concentration in Criminology. For more information on the sociology major contact Dr. Saundra Westervelt in 318 Graham, sdwester@uncg.edu.
