Recreation and Parks Management is the study of the design, management, implementation, supervision, expansion, and necessity of recreation and leisure services for individuals and groups of all ages and backgrounds. Study of the recreation and park industries encompasses a broad range of events and activities related to camping, natural resources, outdoor activities, arts, amusement parks, therapy, sporting events, and community recreation programs. A few of the many specialties within this growing field are gerontology, youth organizations, parks, public recreation, event planning and management, specialized facility management, commercial enterprising, therapeutic recreation, community inclusion, sports management, resource management, and recreation and parks administration. UNCG offers a B.S. in Recreation and Parks Management, with three concentrations in: Leisure Services Management; Therapeutic Recreation; and Commercial Recreation and Special Event Management. Also, a Master of Science degree (M.S.) in Parks and Recreation Management is offered in Leisure Services Management; Therapeutic Recreation; and Travel, Tourism, and Commercial Recreation.
The Leisure Services Management concentration prepares students for supervisory and managerial positions in the public and non-profit sectors of the leisure service delivery system. Students learn the concepts, philosophies, and applications necessary to effectively and efficiently administer programs and services in a variety of leisure service settings, including municipal and county departments, state and national agencies, voluntary youth serving agencies, religious-affiliated social agencies, and employee and corporate recreation programs.
The Therapeutic Recreation concentration prepares entry-level practitioners at the specialist, supervisory, and/or administrative levels of practice to work with people with disabilities or chronic conditions. The curriculum is consistent with the standards of the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. The conceptual basis for instruction encompasses the philosophical position statements of the National Therapeutic Recreation Society and the American Therapeutic Recreation Association. Graduates are prepared to enter professional practice as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists and Licensed Recreational Therapists in active treatment, leisure education, transitional treatment, and community leisure service delivery systems. With completion of a core of additional courses, graduates are also prepared to enter a professional master’s degree program in Occupational Therapy (OT) or Physical Therapy (PT).
The Commercial Recreation and Special Event Management concentration prepares students for employment in the private for-profit and entrepreneurial sectors of recreation and event management industries. Students learn the underlying concepts and components of the recreation industry, business practices and principles, and the planning and management of events. Graduates seek jobs in the commercial industry and apply them in settings such as resorts, theme parks, convention and visitors bureaus, private recreation businesses, health and fitness clubs, country clubs, sporting venues, and corporate employee service programs.
