Housing
and interior design is the study of the planning of space
and furnishing of interiors of private homes, public buildings,
and commercial establishments such as offices, restaurants,
hotels, and theaters. With a client’s tastes and
needs in mind, interior designers develop designs and
prepare working drawings and specifications for interior
construction, furnishings, lighting, and finishes. They
design the space in accordance with federal, state and
local building codes. In addition, they plan spaces that
meet accessibility standards for the disabled and elderly.
Housing and interior designers generally need a four-year
college degree for entry-level positions. In addition,
though employment is growing faster than average for designers,
competition will continue to be keen. UNCG offers a BS
in Housing and Interior Design. For more information on
the housing and interior design major contact Tommy Lambeth
in room 259 of the Stone Building.
