The Department of Economics provides students with an understanding of economic principles, concepts, and institutions and the ability to analyze economic problems and public policy issues. Economics is a social science concerned with public policy issues such as pollution and the environment, the health system, central bank policy and inflation, unemployment, the productivity of the labor force, economic growth, and international trade and finance. The Economics Department offers students the option of a B.S. degree in Economics that requires students to take a significant number of business courses or a B.A. The B.A. degree allows students to earn a liberal arts degree and to have the flexibility to double major. A major in economics can be combined with a major in areas such as international business studies, geography, political science, history, English, mathematics, and the sciences. Interdisciplinary work in the areas of the environment, regional development, public policy, health, or gerontology can be taken by the enterprising student who seeks out appropriate course work in a variety of departments.
Both undergraduate degrees provide the student with enhanced access to the job market and to graduate and professional education. Additional statistical and quantitative course work allows students to develop research skills and computer expertise that are important for entry into the job market and graduate programs.
The Economics Department offers a three-semester Master of Arts degree in Applied Economics that provides the student with the theoretical and statistical training to enter the job market as a professional economist employed by financial institutions, health organizations, consulting firms, research organizations, and government agencies. The MA program in Applied Economics is one of the best in the country and has an outstanding record of professional placement of its graduates at starting salaries that more than justify the additional three semesters of graduate study.
