Paid Internship

"What's better than getting paid for an internship where your job is to create fun?!"

Landing the Internship.....
I was working at the Spears YMCA during the school year and found out about a full-time opportunity for the summer. I discussed the possibility of completing my internship in conjunction with the summer position with my boss, and he accepted my offer!
The Internship Experience...
I was the Program Coordinator for the Counselors in Leadership Training camp for 13-to 16-year-olds. I directly supervised two staff members and indirectly supervised a team of 30 staff members. Each week we typically enrolled 20 to 25 teens in the program. I was responsible for creating and facilitating the 10-week service-learning style program, including all day-to-day operations, communication, and logistics.
Benefits of the Internship...
This internship was both extremely challenging and rewarding. I built so many relationships with the youth, their families, staff, and organizations in the community. I learned a lot about program management, public speaking, presenting, and professional coaching. I also had a great time! What’s better than getting paid for an internship where your job is to create fun?!
Advice to Students...
Start early! I landed this summer position before the spring semester began. I would start contacting prospective internship sites well before they would start the hiring process, just to get yourself on their radar. Even if the organization doesn't list an official job or internship opportunity on their website, let them know that you are interested if an opportunity is available. If money is an issue (especially for unpaid internships), look for outside funding for support. I was awarded a scholarship through the UNCG Career Services Center to assist with my tuition while I had this internship, which really helped.
