Internship Spotlight

Allen

Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Greensboro, NC

Allen Tyndall

Fall 2011

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Allen Tyndall. I grew up in Durham, NC and was always interested in owning a business. I detailed cars as a young teen and cut grass around the neighborhood every day of the summer. I enjoyed working hard and being rewarded for it; it's exciting to me. I was always hunting for better opportunities so I started an online business for pet products, which has been a challenge, but very rewarding. In my life, it's the challenge that keeps me going.
What did you do to land your internship?
Honestly, I was not looking for an internship. A gentleman working with Northwestern Mutual passed my information along to the recruiter for the Greensboro location and I received a call almost immediately. I met with the company and 3 interviews and a presentation later, I was on board! The presentation was a unique method of interviewing because I had to tell them why I should be offered the position.
What was your internship experience like?
I create and manage my own schedule and business. By no means is it easy; in fact it is the most challenging thing I've ever done. You will get out of it exactly what you put into it. Northwestern Mutual wants me to be successful and it is clearly evident based on the endless amount of support. I've developed a craving for networking and meeting potential clients and I love it. The overall experience to date is remarkable.
What do you see as the benefits of your internship and interning in general?
Interning is a safe way to get your feet wet and test the waters before you dive in. There are careers out there that can break you if it is not the right fit for a certain individual. For my internship with Northwestern Mutual it is the same thing. It is not for everyone and I'm thankful for the internship because I am able to really get a feel for my potential growth within the company and industry before becoming a full time agent.
What advice do you have for other students?
If you are thinking about an internship and you are a real go getter, I highly encourage looking into the opportunities with Northwestern Mutual. You really impact people's lives in this industry and create lifetime relationships with your clients. If you find yourself doing well as an intern, you will move right into a full time position after your graduate. I am thankful every day for the opportunity placed in front of me and would not change it for anything.
