Four Year Plan


Freshmen Year

  • Take UNS 101 or Business 105 to help you learn about UNCG resources and services
  • Tour the Career Services Center (CSC)
  • Develop excellent study skills for academic success
  • Become involved in a student activity or club
  • Meet with a CSC Counselor to learn what services are available and assess your interests, skills, work values, and personality
  • Research majors and related careers
  • Talk to upperclassmen and professionals in chosen fields about majors, jobs, and careers
  • Shadow (observe) a professional at work
  • Let CSC help you find a career-related part-time or summer job

Sophomore Year

  • Take CED 210 (Career/Life Planning)
  • Begin to grow your transferable skills (leadership, public speaking, organizing, etc.) in on-campus activities and volunteer experiences
  • Conduct informational interviews (short conversation with chosen professional)
  • Develop your resume and a cover letter
  • Attend CSC events and career days to meet employers and learn to "network" (discuss your career interests and seek advice from others)
  • Make a career plan (CSC counselors can help)
  • Identify potential internship sites and complete an exploratory internship

Junior Year

  • Choose electives to help you grow goal-related skills
  • Update and polish your resume
  • Practice interviewing with a career counselor in a "mock interview"
  • Complete a career-related internship
  • Explore Graduate School (if required for your chosen field of interest)
  • Continue to "network" with professionals in chosen fields at CSC-sponsored events and through informational interviews

Senior Year

  • Develop your Personal Job Search Plan and Marketing Package with the assistance of a Career Counselor
  • Have a CSC professional critique your resume
  • Create an account on SpartanCareers to help with your job search
  • Polish interview skills in CSC mock interviews
  • Participate in Career Days and On-Campus Interviewing
  • Select faculty references, talk with them about your job/graduate school search, and give each a copy of your resume
  • Take graduate school admission test and finish graduate school application process (CSC counselors help with essay critiques) if you plan to attend
  • Begin your job search (use all CSC resources and keep a log of contacts, interviews, and follow-up activities)
