Recent Graduate Turns Childhood Dream into Reality

"For me, choosing a major at UNCG was not difficult. In regards to my career ambitions, I have always desired to teach children or work with children (one-on-one), in an effort to help with their individual childhood development. I graduated from Central Piedmont Community College and transferred to UNCG. As soon as I got here, all arrows pointed towards Human Development and Family Studies, with a concentration in Early Care and Education," said LaJoia Coleman, a December 2011 graduate.

LaJoia ColemanColeman came to UNCG prepared to really dive into her chosen career field. When asked about her favorite class, it was a difficult decision. "Every single class within my major had a huge impact, in regards to my professional growth. If I had to choose particular courses or experiences, I would pick my practicum and student teaching courses. Both course requirements gave me a chance to prepare for a career within childhood development because I gained valuable skills regarding problem-solving and creativity within the education and childhood development industry." That practical experience, outside the classroom, really impacted Coleman. "I love the fact that UNCG provided me with an opportunity to enhance my teaching and educational development skills by gaining experience within my desired field. Through my internship, I learned how to make important decisions, especially regarding lesson plans for each particular day. I also learned how to plan, coordinate and implement fun and appropriate field trips for students within my class."

"With all of my preparation from both my major and the UNCG Career Services Center, I was hired as a Lead Teacher at "Kid's R Kids," soon after graduation. My specific job duties include teaching five-year-old children the basic concepts as they prepare for public school education. My main areas of focus (in terms of childhood development) include vocabulary development, numbers, and effective writing skills." Coleman shared she utilized Career Services to attend the Education Career Days and even received a job offer through one.

Coleman is motivated and has a desire to really maximize her education and experiences. "My long term goals include opening my own childcare center. To reach these goals, I work hard to ensure that I gain all of the necessary skills and competencies, regarding childhood development and transition. I am also considering graduate school sometime in the future. "

Coleman wanted to pass along this advice to current students: "I would just reiterate the importance of persistence. Don't give up! Be patient and use your resources. It is important to utilize all of the resources offered through UNCG and the Career Services Center – especially Career Fairs, workshops and mock interviewing appointments."
